By at March 29, 2011 | 11:11 am | Print

Early Voting Ends March 31Participation is picking up in the final days of Early Voting, with 1,970 suburban voters casting ballots on Monday to mark the greatest single day turnout so far this voting period, Cook County Clerk David Orr announced Tuesday.

Since Early Voting began March 14, 18,535 suburban Cook County voters have participated even though fewer than half of all races are contested. In the last two consolidated elections, Early Voting accounted for 3 percent (8,205) and 8 percent (25,737) of ballots cast in 2007 and 2009, respectively.

The busiest sites after two weeks of Early Voting are in areas with contested races: Centennial Ice Rink in Wilmette (2,675); Chicago Heights Village Hall (1,757) and the Lemont Library (1,135). Early Voting continues until Thursday, March 31. All sites are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please visit cookcountyclerk.com for a full list of Early Voting sites. Chicago voters must vote at an Early Voting location in Chicago.

State law requires early voters to display valid identification to an election official before receiving a ballot to vote early. Valid forms of ID include: a current driver’s license, state-issued ID card or another government-issued ID with a photograph.

A complete candidate list, referenda questions and write-in candidates are available online.

Voters also have a few days left to request an absentee ballot by mail. Applications must be received by March 31. Voted ballots must be returned or postmarked by Monday, April 4.

REMINDER: Members of the media do not need special credentials from the Clerk’s office to visit a suburban Cook County Early Voting site. Please bring identification from your news outlet and present it to the election judges.
