Commissioner Rogers urges those who feel they have been over assessed to contact the Board of Review to file a property tax appeal. He states that, “At the Board of Review, we continue to take into account the current downturn in the real estate market in Cook County. Taxpayers are struggling in this economy, which is compounded by excessive tax bills. Homeowners are finding it hard to make ends meet, which is why we consider all possible factors in attempts to grant relief to taxpayers.” There are several grounds for property owners to appeal, including, but not limited to: comparable properties nearby that have been assessed at lower values; the factual errors in the description of the property or mathematical errors in computing the assessment; property that has sustained damage by fire, flood or other casualty or has been wholly or partly demolished; or property that was recently purchased for less than the fair market value placed on the property by the Cook County Assessor.
The Board of Review does not assess property, set tax rates, or collect taxes. There is no fee to file an appeal, and in most cases an attorney is not necessary. Board of Review complaint forms can be obtained at the office of Commissioner Larry R. Rogers, Jr. in the Cook County Building located at 118 N. Clark, Room 601, Chicago, IL 60602. They may also be found on the Board of Review website at: www.cookcountyboardofreview.com. For further information about appealing your property taxes you may contact Commissioner Rogers’ office at (312) 603-5540. Office hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
