Commissioner Larry R. Rogers, Jr. and Fellow Elected Officials Hold Crucial Property Tax Appeal Forum in Thornton Township

Lewis, City of Markham Mayor David Webb, Jr., Village of Phoenix President Terry R. Wells, 29th Legislative District Representative Thaddeus Jones, 30th Legislative District Representative William Q. Davis, 6th District Cook County Commissioner Joan Patricia Murphy, 5th District Cook County Commissioner Deborah Sims, Village of Dolton Trustee James Jefferson, Calumet City 3rd Ward Alderman Thaddeus Jones, , Calumet City 4th Ward Alderman Brian Wilson, Calumet City 7th Ward Alderman Antione Collins will be hosting a joint property tax appeal forum on Saturday April 30th, 2011.  The event will take place at Thornton Fractional North High School, located at 755 Pulaski Rd., Calumet City, IL. at 10:00 a.m., in the auditorium.

While this event is being hosted for residents of Thornton Township, which is scheduled to close for filing with the Board of Review on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, it is also open to all those who feel they have been over assessed and own property within the Townships of Hanover, Leyden, Northfield, Palatine, Schaumburg, Thornton, Lake, Lemont, North Chicago, South Chicago, West Chicago, Worth and Wheeling. The forum will consist of a presentation, where the function of the Cook County Board of Review, issues surrounding property taxes, and the importance of filing a property tax appeal will be discussed. After the presentation there will be a question and answer period, after which Board of Review staff will assist attendees with filling out appeal forms. As mentioned, City and State Officials will also be available to answer questions and provide additional information. Taxpayers are urged to please bring their tax bill to the event.

Commissioner Rogers launched an aggressive community outreach campaign during 2008 in response to the property tax crisis that residents across many communities of Cook County were facing. He stated that “Through unemployment or underemployment, taxpayers are simply without the means to afford exorbitant tax bills.” Commissioner Rogers has continued this effort and will also be hosting the following property tax appeal forums:

The Board of Review does not assess property, set tax rates, or collect taxes. There is no fee to file an appeal, and in most cases an attorney is not necessary. Board of Review complaint forms can be obtained at the office of Commissioner Larry R. Rogers, Jr. in the Cook County Building located at 118 N. Clark, Room 601, Chicago, IL 60602. They may also be found on the Board of Review website at: www.cookcountyboardofreview.com. For further information about appealing your property taxes you may contact Commissioner Rogers’ office at (312) 603-5540. Office hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
