Statement From President Preckwinkle On Immigration Executive Order:
I applaud President Obama’s decision to stop deporting young, undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children. Allowing these young people, who are either in school or the military, to stay and work in the U.S. offers hope to hard working residents and brings us closer to realizing the goals of the Dream Act legislation.
My administration has opposed the wholesale deportation of undocumented immigrants who don’t pose a national security or public safety risk. The president’s executive order is a positive step forward in overhauling unfair and conflicting immigration laws, and establishing a comprehensive immigration policy that protects our borders, as well as the American dream.
