Illinois closer to approving online voter registration

Illinois closer to approving online voter registrationCook County Clerk David Orr congratulates the Illinois Senate Executive Committee on bringing Illinois one step closer to offering online voter registration.  An omnibus elections bill, sponsored by Sen. Don Harmon, passed out of committee today and could get a full vote today or tomorrow.

“Online voter registration may be the biggest advancement in expanding the electorate since Motor Voter passed 20 years ago,” Orr said. “I’ve long supported online voter registration because it will be a convenient, secure way for voters to get registered and start participating in their democracy.”

Online registration will save taxpayer dollars and make records more accurate, Orr said. In other states, processing an online registration dropped from 83 to 3 cents and online applications were five times less likely to result in errors, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.

“Voters will love ditching paper and pen for registering online,” Orr said. “In other states, online registrations represent the majority of new voters and are particularly popular among young voters.”

Orr worked with House Speaker Mike Madigan, House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie, Senate President John Cullerton, Sen. Harmon, and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White to help fine tune the details of HB 2418. Orr also commends Gov. Pat Quinn for raising the issue earlier this year and the Illinois State Board of Elections for its hard work.

Orr said the bill includes the proper safeguards. Online registrants must provide: 1. Driver’s license or state identification number; 2. Driver’s license or state identification issuance date; and 3. Last four digits of Social Security number.

Eighteen states currently offer online registration or are in the process of implementation
